History of Hurricanes at Amelia

August 17, 2009 by ameliaislandplantationrealestatesales

With our first three named storms for the hurricane season upon us, I thought it releavnt to let everyone know Amelia’s history with hurricanes.  According to the National Hurricane Center, you are 25% more likely to experience a hurricane on Manhattan and Long Island than on Amelia Island.  In the last 155 years, just three storms of hurricane strength have
come ashore in the vicinity of Amelia Island. In fact, the last time Amelia Island experienced hurricane conditions was when Dora came ashore about 50 miles to the south in 1964.

The attached map shows the hurricane strike zones since 1905.

A good day fishin’

August 5, 2009 by ameliaislandplantationrealestatesales

Our sales executive Joe Cutajar shares his latest fishing trip catch…

IMG00120 - sm

Four flounder, the larger one was over 21 inches, and a red fish.  All were caught on the south end of Amelia Island in the Intracoastal using live fingher mullet for bait.  We didn’t use a boat so you don’t need one to have a good catch on Ameila.  We wade into the water to about waist high and cast out into the channel.  That’s the great thing about living here – you can sneak off and be fishing in less than 15 or 20 minutes and fish for a few hours.  And if you’re fortunate, which is quite often, you can have fish for dinner!  Other fish caught in the area are sea trout and drum.  – Joe Cutajar

AIP now distinguished with Palm Two status!

June 23, 2009 by ameliaislandplantationrealestatesales

Amelia Island Plantation is now  distinguished with the prestigious Palm Two status given by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).  The meaningful and difficult certification can be awarded only to properties which have won the initial Palm One designation, and have shown continual environmental progress for at least one year.  Only 26 properties in Florida have been designated as Palm Two properties, with only one property designated a Palm Three. The voluntary state initiative provides the lodging industry with technical assistance by encouraging hotels and motels to adopt cost-saving “green” practices that reduce waste and conserve natural resources.

Amelia Island Plantation’s commitment has a wide spectrum of initiatives.  These initiatives include its resort-wide recycling program is comprised of the resort’s large residential community, guests and employees.  The program incorporates glass, plastic, aluminum and newspapers, plus electronics.  In its latest contributions, Amelia Island Plantation is utilizing biodegradable plastic bottles in its various outlets, increased bulk purchasing and monitored water and energy savings in laundry operations.  The resort also uses computerized energy-saving HVAC systems in its oceanfront Amelia Inn, automatic and low flush water fixtures in guest and public restrooms, low energy and long lasting fluorescent lighting resort wide, Project Planet linen and towel re-use program, reclaimed water for irrigating its landscaping and golf courses, and clean and green pest control and housekeeping products.

To be a designated member of the Florida Green Lodging Program, hotels must implement a variety of green practices. These practices include, but are not limited to, water conservation measures, energy efficiency, waste reduction and use of green cleaners, high efficiency air filters, and clean air handler units frequently.
